Editorial: Fiber Optics Bridge Project #3
The BROADBAND PROJECT been renamed THE FIBER OPTICS BRIDGE PROJECT. Why? Answer: The name was misleading and did not express the true nature and potential of this modern facility. 1.7 million ratepayer dollars has been invested in the Frankfort Fiber Optics Bridge and Data Center. This modern infrastructure was started as a forward thinking project in light of our entering the 21st century digital age! IS THIS A WISE OR FOOLISH INVESTMENT? This Frankfort infrastructure can perform two fundamental functions. (1) The Bridge will connect Frankfort to the outside world through the Indiana Fiber Network. This has some wise and sound advantages. That connection is a result of the recent 3 to 2 Utility Board vote. (2) The Fiber Bridge actually does, provide inter-communication, data and video between government institutions in Frankfort. There are other far-reaching possibilities. The Fiber Optics Bridge already facilitates the three Frankfort Fire Department locations to network . sharing documents, data, programs etc. This allows the three locations to collaborate their duties better. The Fiber Bridge has the potential of connecting all the Frankfort schools together for communications, video and data. With digital the possibilities are limitless. The Fiber Bridge transmits video surveillance pictures guarding the war memorial at the south side of the court house. Eyes at the Clinton County Sheriff's office can monitor the memorial 24/7 for vandals and destruction. A digital world plus the Frankfort Fiber Transport has the potential to raise the well-being of the Frankfort community. This is a factor in bringing Frankfort, technically, into the 21st century. If we proceed in a wise, cautious and prudent manner Frankfort can be as up to date as downtown Kansas City. The Mulberry Cooperative Telephone company studied over the possibilities and advantageous of going digital. They were, as we are now, faced with decisions. They made the decision to build.and now have a very fine 21st century digital operating system that serves Mulberry and surrounding rural communities well. Frankfort, through its initial 1.7 million dollar investment has a solid start in developing an asset to better serve us and the Frankfort generations to come in this new digital age. At one time our forefathers took the plunge and invested in a 20th century, what some thought as a new fangled, electric distribution system. That was the right thing to do because they realized that electricity was not going to go away and it didn't. Now 21st century digital is here and it is not going to go away either. More and more uses will be found as time goes on.
The Bridge and Data Center begs for development.each basic stage has to be approved by a majority vote of the Frankfort Service Utility Board. I see this modern project following a slow and deliberate course. Each step being financially sound and self amortizing over time. The consensus is, and I totally agree, that at some point in the progress there has to be a Frankfort City/Private Partnership to develop this infrastructure to its potential. To approaches its end potential there is no way the city could run this project with all the political churn that develops in any municipal administration. History shows.with the fall of the railroad economy Frankfort elected to enhance our Industrial economic base with an airport? Didn't we developed our airport in this same manner a Frankfort City/ Private Partnership called an FBO? We are now at a time of decision. The basics of this 21st century Frankfort asset are in place. The Fiber Optics Bridge and Data Center are a reality. 1.7 plus millions of rate payer dollars have been invested in a Frankfort infrastructure not yet developed to its potential. We are faced to do some serious thinking on what it is we have here.and what are its benefits and possible pitfalls. It would seems wise that we don't just say NO..NO to this 21st century idea until we have taken the trouble to find out just what it is we are saying NO to. As our past Frankfort leaders prepared community infrastructure and assets for OUR generation we now have an opportunity to prepare, not only for us, but for Frankfort's generations to come.
